Anyone Play the Guitar?

Postby ECO » Thu Oct 07, 2010 1:50 pm

A few years ago my brother (a guitar player) came to live with us for a month and talked me into getting an electric guitar and an amp. His plans to teach me how to play ended when I can only play by notes and he can only play by sound (he can't read music). For the past few years my guitar has been collecting dust in my closet until my daughter found it and now wants to play it....thank god she did not find the amp!

Today I stopped in my local guitar center and picked up a cheap beach/campfire guitar for $44.00, a book "Girl's Guitar Method Complete" with a DVD and some other crap that brought my total to $130

So.....how long should it take a 9 year to catch on?

At what point do you give up and get them lessons?

Not me. But I wish I had pay attention in music class back home. Now I fondly remember my music teacher and the songs and instrument he thought us, but I was just too LAZY to learn. Whenever I heard John Lennon "Immagine" it brough back memories of Mr. Wilson music class  If only I had take the time to learn to play at least one instrument.

ECO, thats real nice that you went out and got her beach/campfire guitar and the other crap  It may get frustrating at times for both of you just act like you want to be there but deep down you know you just want her to give on this guitar playing idea  . How long does it take? I've no clue.If she continues to show interest in playing guitar start paying for lession. I can hear it lol and you telling her "thats great sweetheart your doing a great job"

Rose, after she watched part of a video and read part of a book she didn't get much UNTIL I showed her how to read music and the layout (strings and frets) and now she can play jingle bells and Old McDonald had a farm....poorly but I can't do much better at this point. Getting her fingers to move on a guitar is still foreign to her.

Good news, her babysitter plays the guitar and is willing to teach her as well....now I might need some lessons to keep up!

My elder son (the Marine) gives guitar lessons on the side. Got him his first guitar (Fender Strat) when he was about 13, and he took to it like a fish takes to water. Though he quickly taught himself to play, I did swing for lessons. He's sort of naturally musically inclined, I guess--plays guitar, saxaphone, a couple of other instruments. My folks bought me a Fender Telecaster and amp when I was in my teens. I taught myself to play House of the Rising Sun, and that's as far as I got. I regret not sticking with it and learning how to play guitar, 'cause I think I could've been the next Buju Banton.
