Bubba (the shrimp guy) in Forest Gump

Postby Wahoo » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:02 pm

My son and I have a running dispute over the casting of the character Bubba ("boiled shrimp, steamed shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp cocktail, shrimp gumbo...") in the movie Forest Gump. There's no question that Mykelti Williamson was perfectly cast for the role, but son tells me that Ice Cube (and another popular actor whose name escapes me at the moment) were offered and turned down the role. I agree with my son that Ice Cube would've been a great Bubba. Where we disagree is that I think Snoop Dogg would've been ideal for the role, and my son thinks I'm crazy. I could even picture Chris Tucker as a funky Bubba. Jean-Claude Van Damme or Arnold Schwarzenegger probably not...

I also briefly considered Jackie Chan for the role of Bubba, but it would've come out "boiled shlimp, steamed shlimp, fried shlimp, shlimp cocktail, shlimp gumbo..." and I wouldn't have known what the hell he was talking about! :bs:

I meant "flied shlimp"--with apologies to Jackie Chan, who I regard as a fine actor and stuntman and martial artist and who I wouldn't want to piss off too much...in case he's a visitor to JAB.

How ironic. I was talking to a friend of my on the phone yesterday about shrimps and how to prepare them. He mention fried shrimps and Forest Gump lol. He said David Alan Grier, and Dave Chappelle were offered the part of Bubba. I was like really?! I think Dave would've been great if he had taken the part. Lol at Snoop as Bobba, he would add Ganja to the shrimps lol.

Yeah, Chapelle would've been a natural as Bubba. But, you know, I could even see myself in that role. In fact, I had my sons over last nite and steamed 2 lb of jumbo shrimp, with Maryland-style crab cakes. I luv fixin steamed shrimp 'cause theys so easy & quick to cook--all you have to do is dump them in a pan of boiling water and sprinkle some Old Bay seasoning on them, and in only a minute or so as soon as they turn pink, they're ready to eat. I was sort of horrified last nite, though, to discover I had only about a teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning left, :yipes: although it was enough (barely), I guess.

Note to self: Add can of Old Bay seasoning to grocery list.

You would've been a natural Bubba Wahoo, lol. I love me some steamed shrimp. I just dont like pealing them. Theres is a seafood place in Philly caled Botton of The Sea, they make the best steamed shrimp ever in my opinion

Thank you, Rose. I appreciate that vote of confidence. I'll take this a step farther and say I think I could've played the role of Forest Gump better than Tom Hanks!

For instance, take the scene in the bedroom where Jenny asked Gump, "Have you ever been with a woman, Forest?" and unslips her brassiere, then an awkward couple of second pass and Gump sort of shudders, and Jenny says, "That's all right, Forest, that's all right" and puts her bra back on. I'm pretty sure I've actually--in real life--played out that scene more convincingly than Tom Hanks... :???:
