Cell Phones in Jamaica Questions

Postby ECO » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:00 am

1. I've heard that you can take a regular cell phone and have it "unlocked" so it will work in Jamaica= True or False?

2. Are there any benefits to having a digicel phone over just using your own phone?

3. Can you order the sim cards and have them sent to the states or are there vendors for the cards in the states?

Yes, I have bought phones on a few different sites unlocked and taken them down to use with digicel chips.

I have not been able to get a digicel phone or chip to work in the US at all.

I was going to check with AT&T to see if they will unlock one of my phones. I have 3 different cell phones now with service and for me it would be easier to use my vacation line with just a chip.

I'll check with my local store since I get along with the staff rather well. If not I know a couple webmasters with unlocking sites but it would suck to get to Jamaica only to find out that the unlock did not work properly.

It's cheaper for us to have phones unlocked here than it is in the Caribbean in my experience. We also have to make sure the phones we take to use out there are either tri-band or quad-band. The older phones don't work. However you can buy a basic nokia in Jamaica for around £20 same as you can here.

You could try Eco. If you know the employees, it might help. Otherwise, they acted like I had 2 heads when I asked them to unlock. AT&T run by Nazi's!

I agree with it is cheaper to get it done here then in JA. Last time I tried in JA, they wanted $50 to do it. I THINK NOT!
