Nanoose Bob was a small boy of possibly three or four years at the time of the Berry Point (Powder Point) massacre (1823). The Nanoose Bay Indians had gone there on a berry picking expedition and were surprised while at rest by a tribe from the north who were on a slave hunting expedition all the males were killed and the women and children were taken captive. Luckily Nanoose Bob’s Nurse was able to avade capture and she and Bob hid untill the raiding partey left.
In his youth Nanoose Bob was a celebrated hunter. In the 1850’s Mark Bate, Nanaimo’s first Mayor received gifts of skins and elk-horns from Nanoose Bob. Mark Bate wrote about Bob saying that he was a very determined person, and would never accept defeat when in the quest of game. He was known to stay in the woods for days when tracking a bear or a deer. A bow and arrow was the only weapon he knew for hunting. When fishing and catching seals, which were plentiful in Nanoose Bay he used a spear.
Nanoose Bob first married at 16 and was married 7 more times after that. He had many sons and daughters one of his daughters was called Peg Leg Annie, who made herself a new leg out of whittled fir and deer bone. You can find out more about Nanoose Bob on the link below. Cheers!

What's pushing us apart isn't loneliness what's holding us together isn't love. Listen to the man who's been touched all his life yes he's the one they call the fool. Where is that savoir of the sidewalk life and the road that takes us to the crusades? We still got along way to go yes we still got a along way to go.
