We were talking about local shopping and Wallmart came up when I told her that here in Canada Wallmart will close a store if it’s employs vote in favor of getting a Union. She was kind of surprised and then she started talking about how in Dallas there is (sort of) a law called – right to work and this law kind of makes it illegal for a union to say – this Company is shut down because were on strike she also said that in Texas labor unions have very little power. It’s the opposite in BC and most of Canada Labor unions have a lot of power – trouble is power costs and corrupts. During the drive we went through a city construction zone there were 10 workers each making over $20 an hour maybe 3 of them were working also kind of look like they had way more equipment then they needed. If the city was to say - we only need 7 guys to do that job or you don’t need that much equipment there would be a walk out and then the bus drivers and other Government services would start having alternating walk outs in support of the road construction workers.
Any way were the Texan and I didn’t see eye to eye was when she stepped out of the vehicle she was a real tall gal.
She was actually the first Texan I met and it was a pleasure because she was quite polite and interesting. Cheers!
PS: When I said that labor unions have a lot of power in Canada it doesn’t include Canada’s largest Territory – Nunavut (pronounced – nu of it) because Nunavut is self Governing and when labor unions asked if they could move in they said – no we will have nu of it. (actually that’s not true except the self governing and largest Territory part)
