Does Jamaica recycle? And what’s its waste disposal policy?

Postby Nanoose » Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:54 am

Today I started wondering if Jamaica is into recycling then I stared wondering what is done with the waste plastic paper, organic material building material est.
Might seem like a couple of odd questions to ask but I am working on a 10 year plan to bring Jamaica’s dollar to par with the US dollar, improve Jamaica’s public education system and create non tourist related business and jobs in Jamaica. .
This recycling thing is something I didn’t consider until today and could be the thing that helps get the job done on time. Cheers!

I can only speak for what I've seen in the hills of Jamaica:

No building materials ever go to waste..no nail is bent beyond unbending and no wood no matter how old is without a use 1-70 years from now.

While their beer bottles don't have a deposit (return for 5-10 cents) they do have some program where people can get money buy bringing them back in bulk.

Food waste= no such thing! If humans don't eat it the dogs will!

Normal garbage= thrown on the side of the road. I hate litter and this is upsetting!

Burning garbage is also considered AOK down there :???:

Note: You might want to get Tink's opinion on this matter since she is from a bigger city in Jamaica where they might practice more standard garbage and recycling methods.

Except for the littering that sounds good – zero waste is the way to go.
Doesn’t look like recycling will have to be a factor in my 10 year plan. Cheers!

That’s cool about the no litter – there is only one area on Vancouver Island that is litter free and it is because there are people that walk around and tell off litter bugs – they also pick up litter well their out for walks. Anyway it sure looks like I will have to find another angle for my ten year plan to bring Jamaica’s dollar to be at par with the US dollar, improve Jamaica’s public education system and create non tourist related businesses and jobs in Jamaica. Cheers!

I've heard about that program and was wondering where they put the focus on. Driving into Ochi a dozen or so times on my past trip I can say without a doubt that they do not focus on that road or people litter quicker than they can pick it up.
