Exporting Tools to Jamaica

Postby ECO » Sat Sep 12, 2009 6:43 pm

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine in Jamaica that wants me to bring him a chainsaw :???: :???: Now since tourists don't generally bring a chainsaw on vacation with them, what do I have to do to get it past customs? I'm not looking to smuggle it!

On a side note, so much for all sorts of room if I bring two suitcases this trip.

So when I go through the second checkpoint where you get your luggage I go to the declare line?

Let's say I was going to use it to cut wood to burn would it still be a gift or would I have to leave the country with it? I'm going to help my friends clear some of their land.

Well I no nothing about bringing a chain saw into Jamaica -
I just know about chain saw safety so I hope you also pack a pair of chain saw
pants, heavy lumber jacket and work gloves. Cheers and work safe!

Where is that savoir of the sidewalk life and the road that takes us to the crusades? We still got along way to go yes we still got a along way to go.

UPDATE:

The guy at the chainsaw store looked at me funny when I said I was taking it on a plane with me so I decided to call TSA to make sure it would be okay. I had these visions of getting dropped off at the airport and them telling me that I could not check in a chain saw...........really glad I called TSA. According to the lady there, they do not allow them on the plane (checked or carried on) and they don't care if they are brand new or not. Funny how they will allow a cook stove on the plane if you dump out the gas but not a chainsaw that has never seen fuel and has a pull cord to start it :-(

As long as you aren't leaving in Jamaica, you would not have to pay taxes on it. They do not check that you leave with everything you came with. Hint, hint. Throwing out the word "volunteer work" will usually always bring positive vibes from custom officials.
In all my trips, I have only been sent over to the "special" line once the guy who checked my passport was on a wee bit of a power trip and gave me the interrogation of a lifetime. I've never had to pay taxes on anything, even though one of my two suitcases are things that somehow get lost on my trip and never make it home with me. Hey, I like to travel prepared, never know when you might need a spare motorcycle part or car stereo while travelling in Jamaica.
It's not the taxes I mind, but the waiting in line, to have my personal things rummanged thru in plain site of returning residents who probably know my mother-in-law. The rumors would make it back to town before I did. :cyan:

If you attempt to take a chainsaw through customs, I'd suggest leaving your hockey mask at home. :jestercolor:
