Hello All! I'll be regularly stalking this site to get some 'insider' info on Jamaica. I'm planning mine and my best friend's 30th birthdays next September (we're a day apart- and I'm the older and wiser, i'll add). Being the research Junkie I am I can't wait to read what Jamaica has to offer. I've already settled on Negril as my first place of Travel for Jamaica, but can't wait to put together a trip that hopefully includes touring the Island for the 5 days we'll be visiting! I want to rent a jeep and cruise the island in style, while drinking mas cervezas making good memories! I'm glad to be here!!!
5 days is too short of a trip to do the whole island in my opinion. I did an around the island trip this spring in 7 days and it was way too short (see my trip report in that section).
Here would be an example:
land at Mobay (Montego bay) @ 1200 noon Travel to Ocho Rios, arriving at 3pm after stops at a cambio and waiting for luggage and car rental Stay in Ochi......tired from a long day of traveling...maybe missing the nightlife Leave Ochi at noon on day #2 heading toward the east coast for a night arriving at 4 pm after a few stops. Stay on the east coast and leave the next day at noon for the Kingston area Arrive at Kingston at 3 pm ish (depending on stops) Leave Kingston the next day (day #3) and head to some place on the south coast or maybe outside of Negril Leave day #3 location to spend a day in Negril
Blah blah blah....not enough time!
So......here's my suggestion:
Arrive day #1 and take a shuttle over to Negril (Kenny's offers $20 per person each way) Chill in Negril for two days (day #1-#3)
Day #3 or #4 get a ride over to Kingston (seeing the south coast on the way) and stay a night or two in Kingston....... RafJam would be my choice of lodging in the hills above Kingston.

Also, the island sucks for a cruise! It's not like the video
The traffic around the major town sucks and the roads are all twisty. From Kingston to Negril can take around 5 hours even though the map makes it look like just a couple of hours. The north coast is better with travel times between Mobay and Ochi= 2 hours and Mobay and Negril=1.5 hours....that south coast is rough!
Dayum! I was able to logon successfully the first try! I must not be as impaired as I thought. But I digress...
First off, NSD, it's Red Stripe, not cerveza. This is Jamaica, not Cancun. If you ask a bartender in Jamaica for "mas cervezas," he'll probably peg you for a battyboy...or worse!
If anyone approaches you and says "I got an eightball just for you!" just remember that eightballs are illegal in Jamaica.
And don't even think about drinking the white overproof rum and then getting on a moped. I heard about one guy who did that and almost killed his damned fool self!
Otherwise, go and soak up the Jamaican rhythm and culture. I guarantee you'll be hooked like the rest of us.

I was a passenger when the moped crashed with 4 of us on it. I know better than to drink overproof rum all evening.....late into the night....and early into the morning and drive....I have my drinking companion do the driving at that point.
Remember, say no to drinking and driving but say yes to someone with more experience doing the same
