Jamaica’s Independencies day and Jamaica’s caves

Postby Nanoose » Sat Aug 07, 2010 9:41 pm

I was doing a Web search about Jamaica’s Independences day and seen something about Jamaica’s president and a ceremony at a cave and then started to find some interesting things about Jamaican caves that I want to find out more about – like they were ceremonial sites for the Tainos, and Taino. And Jamaican caves were secret meeting places for plotting enslaved revolts. There are also rock carvings (petroglyphs) and paintings (pictographs) in Jamaican caves
So I thought a thread about Jamaica’s Independencies day and Jamaica’s caves would be interesting. Cheers!

I found an interesting page about the Troy – Windsor Trail and how it was built in the 1700’s by British soldiers and one of the reasons they built it was to beat the Maroons back into slavery. Cheers!

I read a little more of that Wikipedia page and found out that there were 2 Maroon wars and I was surprised to see that in 1796 about 600 Maroons were deported to Nova Scotia Canada and some settaled in the Creole comunites (settlers from New Orlens) so I thought I would add a Cajuin video but couldn’t find a good one on youtube but did find a video on how to make shrimp sausage creole. Cheers!

Your timing on the caves is perfect! I'm working on a review of the Roaring River caves and stumbled on the same Jamaican Caves site as you and within a day of each other. Check out the part about the cave going to a town 3 miles away and maybe all the way to Mobay.

Something weird, I found a plant species in one of the caves that grows without ANY light......

Well if I went to Jamaica I would probably spend more time in caves or on the Troy –Windsor trail looking for unexplored caves full of Spanish gold then I would on the beach. I’m kind of glad I started checking out Jamaican caves because I am finding out a lot of things I didn’t know about Jamaica history.

I used to work under ground and once seen plant life 600 feet below the service always wondered if some one was playing a joke on me. I have been 2800 feet under ground and think it’s kind of weird that 600 feet didn’t bother me but 2800 feet starts to creep you out. Cheers!

Found that interesting because I figure to understand independence you have to look into the past and see how far you have come and what it took to get there. Cheers!

The art page was under construction on the Maroon link you added so I did a search for Maroon art but got side tracked by this video. Cheers!

Nanoose, this is the blog post about the Roaring River Caves that I just posted. http://www.jamaicatravelforum.com/roaring-river-jamaica

I really wanted to touch on their importance to the slaves that lived there on the plantation but it sounds so much better hearing it from a guide so people will have to go "once you go you know" or whatever the saying is.
