Is Jamaica safe for a single woman?

Postby Dancing Susan » Sat Sep 05, 2009 2:30 pm

I'm going to travel at some point to Jamaica on my own (single woman) and people keep telling me that Jamaica is not safe for single women. I have been searching on a few forums and have not found a single discussion about women having problems in Jamaica! Are the people who are telling me this stuff making it up?

If I ask too many questions please let me know, on another forum people keep giving a guy and his wife grief :wedgie: because they ask a bunch of questions.

Thanks,
Susan

Before I went to Jamaica my first time a few people told me that I was crazy and that Jamaica is not safe. A good friend of mine based his judgment of Jamaica on getting off a cruise ship, getting in a taxi and the driver telling him and his wife how unsafe it was. He claimed the driver said to not get out of the taxi, not to talk to anyone and if they stopped not to look at anyone. My cousin and his wife also went and when they traveled the poverty in some areas scared the hell out of them. A few other people could not quote personal experiences but "they heard about how unsafe it is" :scratchheadblue:

The truth:

Nobody on this forum has ever posted about being robbed, raped, murder or any other crime that I can think of.

I have belonged to 4 Jamaica forums over the past 16 months and have never once heard of any crimes other than 2 people having stuff missing from their hotel rooms.

The guys down there will hit on you regardless of how you look but the women folk here are better at telling you how to fend them off. IMHO, you might like the attention

In reference to asking too many question...........not an issue, ask away, hopefully people here can answer them.

EDIT; I just found this other thread here that deals with the subject as well: dealing-with-unwanted-attention-from-jamaican-men-t226.html?hilit=unwanted%20jamaican%20men

My advise is to keep your head up and use logic. if you wouldnt do it at home you probably shouldnt do it in JA. I wouldnt walk at night by yourself....keep your money out of sight...and just be wise.

Yes - I totally agree - don't do in Jamaica what you wouldn't do at home - especially when it comes to men because you will get a lot of attention - just because you are a woman.

I agree that it is best to be aware of your surroundings and to use your best judgement. I just recently returned from Negril alone and I am too a single female. I had the time of my life. I participated in different excurisons and partied as well. Overall, just make sure that you follow your first mind, if something or someone doesn't seem right don't take the risk. Don't let others scare you, you know how to make the right decision.

i agree with this, having done the same thing. it is safe, if you make it safe - but its also bloody hard work! good luck
I intrigue more people in real life than I do in cyberspace. What I WILL do is to capitalize on their attraction to me.If I set out to take advantage of anyone's attraction, its simply for the benefit of God's kingdom.People such as myself, whether we try or not, will always radiate some kinda attraction that men find alluring.my message to those who find it annoying "Don't hate".

All a single woman needs to do to be safe in Jamaica is follow the "Aspirin-a-Day" Plan--ie, one aspirin a day...pressed firmly between the knees. :jestercolor:

That aspirin a day can be use universally. Or, a Chasity belt and leave the key at home.

Even that aspirin, however, may offer little protection from SDA (Sudden Daggering Attacks). You've been warned!

I agree. Use judgment.I think NYC is probably worse than Jamaica for a single woman. Don't "flaunt" your wares. and don't carry a purse. Walk with a purpose and be strong and confident. These are the best deterrents that you can use anywhere. Focus on an area ahead of you and keep looking at it. Remember you don't HAVE to talk to anyone. And of course, stay out of areas that do not look safe or are not well lit. These are all common sense approaches and should be used where ever you are....even in the states!
