Do Jamaicans have their own style of self defense?

Postby Nanoose » Tue Aug 10, 2010 1:17 pm

Once I asked a friend of the family – what the heck kind of fighting was that and he proudly said Jamaican. It was a very graceful but affective way of fighting because it seemed to be a bit hypnotizing or something (hard to explain). Any way I once asked this same question on another Forum and didn’t get much enlightenment besides Jah doesn’t like fighting. (which I believe to be true)
But I am still curious and am going to see if I can find some videos of that style of fighting because it was kind of cool. Cheers!

I have never heard of such a thing. I'm almost certain when people get past a verbal confrontation the style of fighting turns to murda.

-Bangaran
A martial art developed by the maroons of Jamaica. Bangaran is taught from generation to generation.

-Machet’e
A Jamaican martial art developed by African Slaves out of a burning desire for freedom.

Lol, keep digging on the Maroons and their methods of combat, they were able to force the British forces into waving the white flag when the British tried to fuc with them.

I couldn’t find a youtube video of Bangaran – kind of wish I could because it’s a Maroon marshal art that’s handed down through the generations.

Capoeira or Kapura are also a Jamaican style marshal art that maybe originated with the Maroons.

I did find 2 videos of a different Jamaican marshal art called Bungo fo. Cheers

Bungo Fu (Jamaican style kung )

Still haven’t found a video for Jamaica Banaran (Maroon) marshal art and I would really like to see that. Cheers!

If you remind me I could film one in a few weeks. Well.....actually one of the people with me with a video recorder could film it, my DSLR takes movies but they are not that great (no popcorn, no beer....).

Nanoose I learn something new today. I never heard of Bungo fu as a form of marshal arts in Ja. Capoeira is a Brazilian dance created in Brazil by th eslaves from Africa. I've seen a lot of dance in Jamaica but not Capoeira. Thanks for sharing.

This thread kind of reminds me of the movie Cool Running because at one time not many people knew that Jamaica had a Bob sled team and not many people know that Jamaica has its own marshal art style called Banaran
There usually is a lot of history behind a marshal art and a reason why it was created (most of the time just to protect an Emperor) other times to even up the odds and that’s exactly what Banaran did.
I have just about given up finding a video of Banaran so it would be way cool if ECO could make a video of a demonstration of Banaran and post it.

This isn’t a Jamaican marshal art but I thought I would through in a Jackie Chan music video from the making of the movie the Drunken Master After I watched it - it reminded me of that Troy - Windsor trail because in part it was built to control water and there is a bit about that in the video. Cheers!
