Ordering Digicel Phones in the US

Can you order a Digicel phone in the US?

I would like to get a phone and a Jamaican phone number prior to my trip so I don't have to worry about it while I'm down in Jamaica. I checked the Digicel site and they don't appear to sell phones from their site and I only see their dealers in Jamaica listed.

I don't need service in the US, I have 3 other cell phone numbers that all work fine here. I am looking to take care of the chore of buying a phone before I leave for vacation.

Why don't you buy a cheap unlocked phone in the US and just get a sim card from digicell when you are there - that's what I did.

That's one of my first stops -- Digicell to buy a cheap phone and a sim card. I heard a cheap phone in JA is around $38 - $40, plus a few bucks for the sim card. That's better than my last AT & T bill of $650 when I returned from JA!

I ended up calling down to Jamaica and asking a friend of mine to pick up a simcard so I can have a number before I arrive. I talked to the people at AT&T and they said I can call to have one of my phones unlocked--I'll post the details on that in case there is a charge.

I dunno, I have two different Blackberries sitting around and I see that they sell them on their site so I ASSUME so but generally I'm wrong when I assume.

I didn't know they'd do this! I have AT & T . . . so if you can follow-up and provide this info, I'd surely appreciate it.

If you would like your phone to be unlocked, please contact AT&T at 1-800-331-0500.

I called AT&T, gave them my phone's model number and the NMEI # (write it down since it's under your battery or call from another phone). After about 10 minutes the lady at AT&T said my old Blackberry Pearl would work on the Network in Jamaica and that AT&T would e-mail an unlock code in about a week. A pretty simple process!

EDIT: They just sent me my unlock code, it only takes about a minute to do all of this:

THIS IS AN AUTOMATED EMAIL PLEASE DO NOT REPLY BACK TO “TULSA CC TECH” AS ALL MESSAGES SENT TO THIS EMAIL ADDRESS ARE AUTOMATICALLY DELETED WITHOUT BEING READ. PLEASE CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE 1-800-331-0500 FOR ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE.

BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO USE THE UNLOCK CODE BELOW PLEASE VERIFY THE FIRST 15 DIGITS OF YOUR IMEI BY TYPING *#06# ON YOUR PHONE’S KEYPAD. THE UNLOCK CODE IS SPECIFIC TO THE IMEI. IF YOUR IMEI DOES NOT MATCH THE IMEI BELOW PLEASE CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE, DO NOT USE THIS CODE AS IT COULD PERMANENTLY LOCK YOUR HANDSET.

IMEI: 355767014402502
UNLOCK CODE: 4756448762741282
Note:

The customer only has five (5) tries to unlock the phone.
If this process is unsuccessful five times in a row, the phone will be permanently locked to the AT&T network.
Unless a specific model number is listed, use the "General" instructions for unlocking a device.
INSTRUCTIONS:

1
Insert AT&T SIM card.
2
Power phone on and turn off the radio (Turn Wireless Off option) Very important.
3
Select Options and then Advanced Options.
4
Scroll down and select SIM Card.
5
Hold down the ALT key and type "MEPD" (multi-tap means this will be typed in "M" "ER" "OP" "OP" "DF")
This does not display on screen.

Hold down the ALT key and type "MEP2" (multitap means this will be typed in "M" "ER" "OP" "OP" alt "TY")
This does not display on screen.
7
Enter the Unlock Code.
8
Press Enter.
9
Reboot device. Device is now unlocked.

Thanks, I'm so use to paying my cell phone bill at the end of each month that I might of forgotten to prepay the darn thing so I can use it! I'll open another thread on the subject of where to prepay.
