Pork patties anyone?

Postby Rose21 » Mon Sep 21, 2009 11:42 am

Mandeville, Manchester - If the Jamaica Pig Farmers' Association (JPFA) has its way, pork patties will soon be a hot, new item on the Jamaican retail market.

"We want to have it in supermarkets in the New Year," president of the seven-year-old association, Angela Bardowell, told journalists following its annual general meeting at the Golf View Hotel on Thursday.

Bardowell said the JPFA's optimism had been boosted by "rave reviews" for test samples of the product at the annual Jack Daniels (whiskey) promotion in May. There had also been very positive responses to other test sampling, she said.

Bardowell said her association was hopeful that in addition to supermarkets, leading patty manufacturers and distributors/retailers would also be willing to take pork patties "on board".

The plan comes against concerns that cultural/religious considerations could prove a hindrance. Rastafarians as well as Seventh-day Adventists and other 'Sabbath keepers' of the Christian faith object to the consumption of pork.

"A lot of the reasons given by persons for not producing (and selling) pork patties is that consumers don't want (traditional patties) to mix with the pork," Bardowell acknowledged

I love my beef patties!! Chicken and veggie patties I have if there's no other option.
For the beef patty lovers how do you feel about pork patties?
If you try it and like it, would you switch to pork patties?

I don't eat pork anymore but some of the best pork I've ever eaten was in Jamaica. Scotchies sells tons of jerked pork and I've never seen anyone complaining about it being cut on the same wooden cutting board as the more kosher items. So.......if the patty people want to sell it I can't imagine it will hold people back from buying it.

As far as the Rastas go, I doubt SOME of them would eat store bought patties in the first place. SOME of them break their "rules/guidelines" so I doubt they will all jump up and down over the non issue.

As far as the "Sabbath keepers"...........once they take the ham sandwich out of their mouth long enough to tell the world how evil bacon is I'll lend them a ear :jestercolor: . It's not a big secret that most of those Sabbath observers acknowledge that pork is no longer a disease infected animal and that they refrain out of respect for the generations before them. (take that with a grain of salt, I get irked at people who preach standards that they don't uphold)

Another thought, the pork people that also produce non pork meals could hire a Rabbi like they do in the rest of the world to make sure the production is kosher.

Eco, if you don't get over to Miss Brown's, there's another cafe on West End Road--Jenny's Favourite Cakes--that I hear serves some scrumptious cakes and other Jamaican fare that you might want to look for. After all, who doesn't like cake?

Eco, Miss Sonia (across the street from Grand Pineapple) serves a delish ackee patty. If you stop off there, get me one, too. I'll pay you back next time I'm flush.

I saw her place and was tempted to stop in for some mushroom tea but the ganja in Negril was all I needed.

On an on topic note: I have yet to see a pork patty for sale down here.

Off topic: Mothers & Island Grill both serve food that I would not feed my pig if I had one.
