Crazy Airfare to Jamaica

Postby ECO » Mon Jun 29, 2009 9:59 pm

For the past few months I've been checking airfare rates to Jamaica once a week or so (I get bored) just to watch for trends or to find some really good deals. A few weeks ago I started a thread here about airfare for under $250.............tonight it is almost at $400! Now before you say something like "prices can change a bunch in a few weeks", note that last weekend I could of gone to Mobay for under $500 and that included a hotel room for 3 nights.

So the purpose of this thread is just so I can track the airfare rates for my vacation this fall.

Tonight's lowest price was $381 after checking 4-5 sites but excluding spiritair.com since they will not fly out on the day I want.

I bought my ticket earlier this week . . . ah, Monday night, I think. I'd been watching American for weeks and it remained at $335. When I went to book it on Monday night, it was $455 (travelling 8/14 - 8/21). I was floored!!!!! I went to Spirit and I got my flights for $267 . . . however, I was really PO'd with the baggage charges ($19 for the first bag one way and $25 for the second). So -- I booked one bag and I'll carry my carry-on (I'll end up paying for a re-do of my cervical fusion in a few years, I suspect, but the baggage rates were highway robbery!) And, to pick where you sit, it was an additional $12 per "leg" of the flight, so $48 round trip (I have a layover both ways).

All in all, $299 for flights and my baggage on Spirit.

I'm jealous of all of you on the East Coast. It's a lot more expensive to fly from California, and it takes a whole day to get there. $250 airfare would be crazy cool!

At least you folks can drive to Vegas or fly there within an hour or two! Plus if I'm not mistaken you can get "cards" to legally buy herb in California

I just checked and the non spirit airlines price is still at $310 for my trip.

You can, indeed, get a medical card to buy. It is, however, still a violation of Federal Law, and if the Feds decide to throw their weight around (and they have a few times in the past), it can get a bit ugly.

Sigh.

Laine, we get stung with silly prices too.
It's just not fair.
And now they are introducing some stupid taxing system that will make our fares even MORE expensive :-x
From November of this year the APD tax will increase from £40.00 per person to £50.00 per person. However, from November 2010 it will increase by a whopping £25.00 per person. This means that a family of 4 will have to £300.00 in APD alone!! Those travelling in the Premium cabins will need to pay even more. The way the tax is worked out is completely unfair as it is based on the flying distance from London to that countries capital. Therefore the whole of the USA falls into band B because of the distance from London to Washington whereas the Caribbean falls into band C. This means that the tax is cheaper to fly to Hawaii or San Francisco than it is to fly to any of the Caribbean Islands despite being further from London.

There is a petition going to try and get this stopped, but somehow I doubt it will have any effect. :-([/quote]

It really isn't fair. $140 of my fare is taxes. Plus the airline charges to check bags (So I'm not checking one).

Lol, I refuse to pay the fees as well! Other than the extra fee for an isle seat on Spirit Airlines I can't see the sense in giving them money for a bag that I can carry on the plane myself.

On top of that I am also worried about the airlines misplacing my luggage..........it would irk me to go without my clothes and camera equipment for days.

EDIT:

The last time I went I had enough extra room to bring 15 or 20 Jamaica & Beyond tee shirts in my carry on bag so IMO a second bag is just not needed........at least for a guy.
