$800 More to fly to Jamaica- Soon Come

Shaw announced Tuesday night that departure tax would be increased from $1,000 to $1,800.

In responding to the concerns raised by IATA, Commissioner of Customs Danville Walker told The Gleaner last night that a manual system would be put in place today through which individuals who are travelling will have to pay the difference of $800.

"We have to put in place a manual system tomorrow (today) where persons who are leaving the island will pay the departure tax," he said.

I feel sorry for anyone who does not know this and tries to leave the island with a nickel to their name

You have paid it if you bought your tickets in the past, since it was built in we never really noticed it. Even now that it is going up $800 nobody will ever notice it except for the people that under paid and will have to make up the difference at the airport.

ive never paid at mbj airport as long as ive been travelling there....like i said always been incorporated into the ticket

sucks though they are increasing it.....especially if people are not aware of it.....ive not seen it advertised on canadian airline sites for mbj tickets

When I went in 2000, I had to pay the departure tax at the airport. If I remember correctly, it was around $18.

Might be a stupid question but did you pay it when you got there or when you went to leave? The reason I ask is there was a point in history where Jamaica would deport people from the US after 6 months at Jamaica's expense and that is why they now make us have return tickets.

From reading the article and discussing this topic somewhere else it looks like they are looking to collect the difference from people who paid the $1000 and not the new $1800.

That's why I thought it was so crazy. I would have to stay and hussle until they deport me for free.....(read somewhere the deport from Jamaica at government expense. *wonder if there's a catch*
