Alumina to cut 762 jobs in Jamaica

Postby ECO » Thu Jan 07, 2010 4:55 pm

762 jobs gone + the local stores that those jobs supported + families without an income= sucky news!

Russia's UC Rusal is cutting 762 more jobs at the West Indies Alumina Company in Jamaica as worldwide demand for bauxite stays weak.

The company said it will eliminate the jobs by March. Just over 100 workers will be retained at the plant in the island's Clarendon Parish. The cuts were announced in a statement Wednesday.

Bauxite is an ore used to make aluminum and one of Jamaica's leading exports. But the sector has been hit hard by the global recession and the industry has cut hundreds of jobs over the past year.

Aluminum giant UC Rusal last year cut 250 jobs and closed plants in St. Catherine and Manchester parishes. source: http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financia ... 2UP300.htm

Well I was thinking that Bauxite might be in low demade but maybe
aluminum might be in high demand. So if Jamacia started using its’s
Bauxite to manufature aluminum it could be a good thing in the long run.
(like there are more jobs in selling a product then just selling raw material.
Cheers!
