liquor in Jamaica

Postby onlywan » Sun Feb 21, 2010 6:18 pm

hi folks.. I recently returned from Jamaica's Montego Bay - Stayed at the Grad Palladium Resort & Spa [definitely recommend the place - it was wonderful]. For $20 each we hired a taxi fellow to take us around shopping to Negril & in one of his 'recommended stores' we were told we can bring as much liquor with under 15% alcohol as we want to Canada... :naughty: None of the 6 of us had ever heard that before in all our travels so we assumed it was just the store owner trying to make more sales & lying to us.. has anyone ever heard of this before? They were trying to get us to buy bottles of Rum-Cream (which is indeed YUMMY!)...
Later on our 'taxi driver' who told us he was responsible for us the entire time we're off the resort, was found outside smoking a huge weed joint... he was so stoned driving us back to the resort that he never said a word & couldn't even count the money we gave him... LOL

Anyway, let me know what y'all have heard on that subject & if this is a popular falacy to the locals in Jamaica.. :dreads:

i would check with canada customs dont think that sounds right...this is from the canada customs website.................Q. How much liquor can I bring into Canada?
A. You are allowed to bring in 24-12 oz. cans or bottles of beer or 40 oz liquor or 1.5 litres of wine free of duties and taxes. You must be 19 years of age to import alcohol into Ontario. Any amount in excess of 45 liters will not be allowed entry.

lol.. ECO it really was quite funny... he had come off as a real 'family man' all the way to Negril & when we surprised him by coming out of Rick's Cafe early, that's when we found himn & a bunch of other drivers standing around smoking pot. But then, everywhere we went we could smell whiffs of pot. It was really something else..ha!

Yeah DAMSWELL, I had checked with customs prior to departure & I saw that too - I even said to the driver (who went into the shop with us) and the store owner that it didn't sound accurate & they got a bit ruffled & insisted it IS right.. I'm pretty sure I smelled a pot-smoking-rat.. but it did add to the Jamaica-mon experience.. heh..

I generally eschew cordials and liquers and those effete spirits, but I've heard Sangster's Original Rum Cream (which sadly I haven't yet tasted) is excellent, preferable even to Bailey's Creme Liquer (which I do very much enjoy).
