Can't understand why I've just now seen this book title ('cause the book was published in 2004), but there's a book by Jon Krakauer that I want to find titled Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. I'm a big fan of Jon Krakauer and devour his books (Into the Wild, Into Thin Air) like they're jerk chicken or fresh papaya. The appendix includes a critique of the book by a high-ranking official of the Mormon church and Krakauer's rebuttal. If I can find a copy, I'll post Wahoo's review after I've read it.

Thanks for the links. Look for Wahoo's review...and his fair and balanced rebuttal of the Mormon church's high-ranking official's critique of the book (I already have a rough draft of my rebuttal written...and I haven't even read the critique yet!).

Cried myself to sleep last nite after finishing reading Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat That Touched the World. I wasn't going to read the last chapter, 'cause I knew how it was going to end, but curiosity got the cat...so to speak.

I just finished Dorian Gray. It was tough for me to get through.

OK, ok, I admit it. I didn't really finish it. One of my BFF's insisted I read it. That he LOVED it. I tried to so hard, so many times. Finally, I bought the cliff notes and read through them. Even they didn't hold my attention. At least, I could discuss it with him intelligently. Sometimes, it's all about making him happy.

Just finished reading The Cat From Hue (http://www.thecatfromhue.com/) by Detriot's bad side of town war correspondent John "Jack" Laurence. Though the longest book (845 pages) I've read in some time, I knocked it off in less than week, it was so difficult to put down. A strange breed, war correspondents.

Gonna turn in early tonite & curl up with a good book. Checked out two library books this evening, even though I know I'll never finish one of them at 1,306 pages (I'm a fast reader, but not that fast!). But the other book, the one I want to get to first, is a new one by one of my favorite authors, Jon Krakauer, titled "Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman." I have a couple of Krakauer's books, and have read and re-read them, and he never fails to leave me spell-bound. (Of course, I used to say the same thing about about Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson, but I digress...)

I sometimes have trouble putting Krakauer's books aside till I've read them from cover to cover in one sitting, so I'd better get started--this could be a long night.

I haven't picked up a book for over a year now! I use to read all the time but then they increased the price of Penthouse Forum and I could no longer afford to read.

Actually, I have a book about the mayor of Providence that I've been meaning to read now for a year or so.

Lately i've been an embarasment in the book department. Don't know what i was thinking when I buy Gorge Vidal Burr at a yard sale. I read two pages and that was it, all of a sudden I want to sleep.

It's not all that bad. I read Infidel by Ian Hersey Ali twice in december.
Now if only I get the courage to start Dubliners it's been sitting on my coffee table for months.

I never did find that Krakauer book about Mormons, but I sort of soured on him anyway after his last book I read (too much leftist editorializing).

Mentioned in another post that I recently read a biography of Jack London, which I enjoyed very much, though it left me with a very mixed opinion of the guy after learning he was such an ardent and outspoken socialist. Even so, read one of Jack London's short stories ("To Build a Fire," in The Greatest Survival Stories Ever Told, edited by Lamar Underwood, who in his foreword to the story wrote, "Cast your mind back for a moment, if you will, and try to recall the the coldest weather you've ever experienced. Well, it's about to get a lot colder.") last night, and that short story--so superby written--will haunt me for a long time. I had intended to do my fed and state tax returns today, but (looking for any excuse to put that onerous chore off till tomorrow) instead I think I'll pour another pint and curl up with Jack London's classics The Call of the Wild and White Fang today.
