Project One Love - For the Kids of Jamaica

Postby ECO » Mon Oct 26, 2009 10:15 pm

Ashley's post about helping people out in Jamaica had me searching around for a website that I've been looking at for the past few months that raises money to help out the kids in Jamaica. Tonight I found it when they posted somewhere about selling tie-die tee shirts to raise money.

Their mission statement-----> http://projectonelove.com/09Mission.html

Homepage-----> http://projectonelove.com/index.html (what a cute little girl!)

The cool tie die tee shirts------> http://projectonelove.com/Rasta-Tie-Dye.html

From the site:

Torrington averages 160 students, most of whom arrive at school hungry, many days they must feed them before teaching or the children can't stay focused. The problem is they don't have a kitchen equipped for that type of preparation.

........as they currently have 53 students in a 12 x 20 classroom, and for a 650 gal water storage tank as the school currently has no water. . We would like to provide a 40 ft High Q shipping container for the modular classroom, effectively doubling the size of the current one.

Your thoughts?

I read the mission statement and it seems they need so little – food for the kids , swing
set , ball est. but it also seems that the little bit they need is miles away. Why are the Jamaican schools like that lack of Government funding or does the older generations of Jamaicans feel education isn’t important? Anyway the sorry state of the schools in Jamaica is a problem that has to be solved. Cheers!

Jamaicas government are confusing, they cry out that the kids are there future.
sametime they shut anything down that helps the kids. aka Community centers, soccer orginizations, day cares.
Jamaica nuh easy, and its not easy to start orginizations.... ( I know this!)

Not good community centers and sports are just as important to a kid as education. Cheers!

Watching those videos it's shocking how a modified shipping crate makes a better class room than what they have now. The same goes for the swing set and the sports stuff, makes you wonder what they did before for recess.

This is a bit off topic but I have wondering if a young Jamaican adult can get a decent education if they join the Jamaican military. Cheers!

That's actually a really good question! Somewhere I posted on here about the college loans in Jamaica being in the 15%+ range so an education without many jobs waiting is RISKY. Along the same lines, when was the last time Jamaica went to war? It's not like the US where your ass will be sent to war to get that free college fund.

Even 2% without many jobs waiting is risky. I did figure the military might be a good way for a young Jamaicans gets an education plus I wouldn’t have to worry about them because Jamaica doesn’t go to war. I figure the more educated people in a Country the better that Country will do. I was thinking that maybe a way to improve the remote schools in Jamaica would be to get the communities involved – like ever body throws in a little food - a few carpenters come over and build a swing set with local material – people check out their closets for sports equipment and donate it and stuff like that.

I figure the easiest way I can help at the moment is to give out tie die Jamaican t-shirts for Christmas presents (4) Cheers!

Not a bad idea, I might have my daughters get me one for Christmas, to bad they don't have kids sizes so I could get them tee shirts as well.
