Questions About Patois

Postby ECO » Mon Jun 01, 2009 8:53 am

OK, some I'm going to try to learn some more Patois and I'm running into some issues so bear with me and what might seem like goofy questions.

"Mi would rada you talk to mi" Translation : "I would rather you not talk to me" <---In this phrase why is the word "not" not used? Also how you say "I would rather you talk to me" ?

If me and mi both mean me or my, why do both words exist? example of mi meaning me &my "Mi back a hat mi". "My back is hurting me"

Ok, while doing some research last night I came across this guy. After listening to him for about 5 minutes all I could make out is that he found it silly that people were daggering in trees. Can anyone here actually understand everything he is saying? I'm not looking for a translation, I just want to know if it is possible to understand his fast rate of speech.

Does everyone in Jamaica speak Patois? I want to go to Jamaica this fall but I would feel stupid going somewhere if I can't speak like the people who live there. IF they all speak it does anyone know where I can get videos or something that will help we speak it in under a month?

Thank you,
Susan

Welcome Susan, Don't stress about the Patois as you will still have a great time.

If you get the time, please start an intro thread so we can get to know you better introduce-yourself.html (intro area).

Welcome to the forum.

I am not aware of any videos out there that can teach you Patois. They all speak English so you do not have to worry about not being understood.
Once there just ask them to repeat something if you do not understand.

Have fun and I hope you come back and tell us all about your visit :D

Thank you. That takes a load off of my mind!
