Racing Sailboats

Postby ECO » Thu May 14, 2009 4:21 pm

Aside from poker & golf the only other "real sport" for me is racing sailboats. Combating the high seas and risk of us being boarded by pirate ships makes it a sport for real men & women. The fact that our bay does not see big waves and the fact that pirates don't venture anywhere near our coast are mute points because both events could happen......that's why we bring plenty of beer so we can party with them and surf on the big waves.

These are the best photos I could get since I only had my camera phone with me, it was cold, I didn't drink enough beer, 80% of our racing fleet did not show up for the practice race and a few other excuses.

No clue why two of those images turned sideways. You need to tilt your head a little to view them

Thanks, actually Providence RI is not really a big city compared to others but I'll take it over Boston any day!

I just left the boat yard where my boat is and it's still there they have not done anything with it yet. Instead of being able to sail on it now that I have time I'm sitting at my boat club goofing on the internet.

I have to tell this story cause this thread reminded me....sort of....

Went to pick up my washer and dryer Sunday from this resale shop. We are out back and guy opens his box truck to get some tools out. There are these racing boats in there.....maybe a foot and a half, two foot long. Really cool boats. Remote control. I ask him about them. Him and his friends were heavy into drugs and decided to get clean and channel energy into something a little more constructive. I'm like "cool". He moves the boats out of the way and laying there is a pipe and a baggie. I'm like, Um, yeah, how is that going for you????????????????????????

I've been on all sorts of boats--headboats fishing for grouper and snapper during the day and for blacktip sharks at night, tugboats, U.S. Navy destroyers and aircraft carriers--but I've never been on a sailboat.

But, Eco, as a Bostonian, let me ask you this: Have you ever been to the Whaling Museum of New Bedford and seen the painting of "The Young Phoenix Departs New Bedford" by William Bradford (1854)? I bought a print of it in a shop in Faneuil Hall (Quincy Market) on a trip to Boston years ago and had it framed, and it's graced my livingroom wall ever since. I wouldn't part with it for anything (except probably a pound of Maui Wowie or Kona Gold or a night with Megan Fox).

Wahoo, we are members over at Battleship Cove in Fall River MA (world's largest collection of retired naval vessels) but we don't venture into New Bedford at all. Maybe once the girls get a little older I'll take them over there but for now they don't need to know about the whaling industry. If they ever want to see live whales I'll take them on one of those deep sea fishing boats, the whales are all over the place next to Martha's Vineyard.

Not sure who Megan Fox is but if she's worth a pound of Maui Wowie then I'll check her out!

Eco, your boat doesn't have a helo pad, but I could still drive shag balls off the deck...if you don't mind patching a few divots.

Odd timing this thread coming up.... tonight if it doesn't rain is opening night for our race season. This weekend we will race to Block Island.......

Not enough room on the deck for a proper swing, you will have to stick to putting.
