Rooms on the Beach, Ocho Rios Review

Postby ECO » Fri Apr 24, 2009 11:44 pm

Dates: 20 &21 April 2009

Type of Room: Jr Suite, 2nd floor, ocean view

Cost: $228 for two nights

After reading 28 pages of bad reviews on Trip Adviser I did not have high hopes for Rooms on the Beach...........the reviews were wrong! Rooms is actually a nice hotel, everything worked, it was clean and the staff were friendly! Since I've stayed in both 5 star resorts and park benches in the past, I've seen shitholes and palaces and while Rooms was not a palace, it was far from a shithole.

Check in: I didn't care for a 3pm check in but I never asked about an earlier one so I can't really complain. My room was not ready until 330pm which was not a big deal since I had some laundry to do anyway. The check in process was quick and easy, just BRING YOUR ROOM VOUCHER to speed up the process. I had to find my room on my own but I expected that out of a 3 star hotel. If you carry 80lbs bags have fun with the stairs since the hotel does not have an elevator/lift.

My room had two double beds, a desk, a couch and some patio doors that had a fake balcony outside so they did not open. Stepping into the room I felt AC for the first time in Jamaica-- mixed feelings since I was so use to the heat without it but it still felt good. The bathroom was clean and the shower water was hot---with plenty of water pressure! I found myself showering 2-3 times a day just to feel the water pressure, it turned me on!

I never once turned on the TV so I can't comment on the channel selections or picture quality. My room had a wireless internet connection which was a plus but I really didn't want to spend my holiday on-line.........

The only negative I can think of was that the ice machines never seemed to have enough ice. I will generally go through 5 gallons of ice a day to keep my beer ice cold and their ice machine could not keep up my my demands

Hotel Grounds:

The beaches in front of the hotel were in very good shape, I never saw any garbage on the ground and the water was free of seaweed and any other ocean debris. The hotel had plenty of beach chairs for their guests and plenty of shaded area if you wanted to chill out away from the sun. I never swam in the water since nobody would skinny dip with me.....well, I never really asked people but they should of known I wanted the skinny dipping thing to be a group thing!

Once in a while I would get approached on the beach about renting a boat or something but I never felt harassed at all. Not once was I offered any Ganja! Yeah, that's a negative since I wanted some!

The hotel had a small swimming pool with plenty of chairs and the staff were always checking the PH levels of the pool water. I really never saw a need for a pool with the ocean 50 yards away...... The pool had a pool bar that was properly staffed and stocked even though the prices were on the high side.

Security:

Without a doubt, the hotel had plenty of security guards on duty at all times. I really care to see them, to me it sends the wrong message but to each their own.

I stayed at Rooms on the Beach for 4 nights in April. I actually got a decent deal off SkyAuction.com -- and paid a total of $67 per night.

My room was 1233 -- on the second floor and although it did not overlook the ocean, I had a decent partial view from the windows at the far end of the room -- and I looked directly across to Jamaica Grande.

The room was spacious, clean, and set up really nice. Bathroom was great too -- and there was a nice closet with a safe and an ironing board and iron in it.

My only complaint was that it was really, really loud in the halls at night and early in the mornings -- and I was awakened repeatedly by commotion and doors slamming loudly. It was Easter Weekend when I was there and the place was pretty full for carnival, so, perhaps that had something to do with it. The last night I was there, a Monday night -- the place was dead -- and I slept great!

Maid service pyssed me off every morning by banging on my door at 9:00 a.m. and awaking us -- wanting to know when they could clean the room. The third morning, I wasn't pleased and got a bit bent with the maid. I was smart and put out the Do Not Disturb sign my last night. The maid also cleaned the room and forgot to stock the bathroom with any towels!!! Thankfully, Corey noticed it before I jumped in and showered. I made a quick call down to the desk, and they had towels brought right up.

We watched a couple of movies on Showtime -- reception was good.

All-in-all, I loved Rooms and would definitely stay there again. It's also a place I would be comfortable bringing my kids (they're 16). Great value -- and I agree with Eco . . . easy check-in.

OOOOOOH, you got a better deal than me!

I sleep really sound so all of the crap in the halls never really phased me.....not saying it didn't wake me up but never really upset me.

They had porn on the TV and you never called to tell me? I never turned mine on but if I knew about the porn I would of never left my room!

BTW, I checked in under my real name, did you ask for Mr Eco or for my real name (Ning Tsichunicci)?

Looking at your balcony.....I should of got one instead of my fake one!

Cute guy in the last pic

Honestly I didn't even know you knew my real last name. Odd that they didn't share that I had checked in.

Not sure how they decide who get what rooms, all I asked was for an ocean view so I didn't have to look at the parking lot.

The one nice thing about my room was having two beds and a couch to sleep on, I slept on all three!

FYI, there's now a Rooms in Negril, too, about a quarter mile east (or is it north?) of Grand Pineapple, Alfred's Ocean Palace, The Jungle, etc.

No, I was flashing the people on the cruise ship, if you look carefully you can see the reflection in the water

I just noticed that Tinks had the same painting in her room as mine. If you scroll up and look at the third lady in from the left it looks like she has 5" under arm hair....ends up being the hair on her head but it freaked me out enough that I was going to cover up the painting.
