See anything cool today?

Postby Nanoose » Tue Feb 02, 2010 10:23 pm

Today well I was supposed to be working I sat around and watched a couple of ladies
on the golf coarse work their trained eagle. The eagles job is to drive the Canadian geese off of the golf coarse. In the past the golf coarse tried all kinds of ways to keep the geese off of the coarse – dogs, canons, remote control plans. and employs on high speed golf carts but the geese always came back after an hour or so. But in the 6 months that these ladies have been using the eagle (and a falcon) the geese are staying away for about a couple of days and the ladies guarantee that pretty soon the geese will stay away all season.
The eagle doesn’t hurt the geese it just scares them by diving at them and screeching really – really loud. What else I thought was cool was there are other types of birds there ducks, swans, song birds est. but the eagle ignores them and concentrates on the geese.

I found a video about Fairwinds golf coarse and it also shows some of the houses were I have planted my 2 lips – I mean tulips as well as trimmed a bush or two (I am a residential grounds keeper). Cheers!

That is cool! Now I want to know how the eagle was trained to not go after the smaller birds....interesting. Around here the Canadian geese ruin everything and I hate to say it but we harbor bad feelings toward Canada because the geese were named after the country. :jestercolor:

Well it’s an American bald eagle but nobody in the Fairwnds area harbors bad feelings towards it because it doesn’t have a working visa. It is cool that the eagle only goes after the geese (also the other birds and ducks seem to know that the eagle is not after them) but what I can’t under stand is why would a flock of geese (30 or 40) be terrified of the eagle - its still a young female so it’s not full grow and the geese are bigger.
What I found way cool was – there were 2 ladies working the bird and the eagle seemed to be more attached to one of the ladies and when it worked with the other lady you could see it couldn’t completely concentrate on its job because it wanted to be with the other lady. But it would eventually do its job and when the one lady sent it over to the other lady the eagle seemed to be way happy and did a few aerial maneuvers. I think it was showing off and saying did you see how easily I scared those silly geese away? Cheers!

Well I did my part and house trained some Canadian geese – I would train them to honk when they wanted to go out side. Then I would open the oven door – they would see the card board cut out of the wild blue yonder at the back of the stove hope in and then I shut he door. Cheers!
