For the last time – yes I have been to Detroit’s bad side of town – might even have a t-shirt that says –
I Survived The Detroit Riots.
The reason I survived was because a black mother of a girl my age (11 or so) stepped in front of me and told anybody that wanted to bash my brains in to leave me be.
For awhile I thought the reason the mother was protecting me was because her daughter was digging on me and after the riot I could go live with them and eventually we would get married and I would get a job at the Ford Motor Company. But I was just a stupid kid – turned out she already had a boy friend who was 14 years old and he had a mustache so she thought he was way cool.
Turned out the reason I survived was because I knew the girl and her brother in grade 1 or kindergarten and I was one of the few kids who played nice with them so they thought I was cool.
Now you say you have been to Detroit’s bad side of town but I don’t think you have because you wouldn’t last 5 minutes there because you’re not cool – this thread has nothing to do with sharing work experience so the title is miss leading and not cool.
Included a link to Gorden Light foots song Black Day in July which shows some old footage of the Motor City during the riots. Cheers!
