The Ruins at Ocho Rios

Postby Wahoo » Mon Mar 09, 2009 9:26 pm

Anybody had the pleasure of dining there? On the day trip I took to Dunn's River Falls on my first trip to Jamaica, it was where my tour bus stopped for lunch before heading on to the falls, and what a memorable experience it was. Scrumptious Asian fare with a gorgeous waterfall and as the centerpiece. And narrow stone steps lead above the waterfall to a splendid garden with all types of trees and plants found throughout the island (eg, breadfruit, ackee, papaya). And the self-appointed tour guide who attaches himself to you in the gardens, knows his stuff and will teach you all about the plants and their medicinal and other properties, but be warned he'll try to shake you down after the "tour" for your last Jamaican dollar. And if you don't give him enough of a contribution the first time, he's not ashamed to demand "Give me some more!" I'd return to The Ruins in a heartbeat if I'm ever in Ocho Rios again. I'd just be sure to state a stern "No, thanks" to the unofficial "tour guide" in the garden.

Sounds like a cool place!

I think all Jamaican tour guides listen to Shakedown Street by the Grateful Dead regardless of if it has anything to do with shaking down tourist! I can't blame them since I would do it in a heartbeat if I could convince people to give me money.

Lemme check tonite to see if I have any pics. I know I took pics on that day trip 'cause I have one that I snapped of Dunn's River Falls that I'm rather proud of (even though I took it with a crappy disposable camera). In fact, I have it framed on my bathroom wall. Gives me something soothing to meditate on while I'm taking care of business.

Yah I think I'll walk in there too and ask to take pics for my "travel website". See if they offer me a free meal.

Here're a couple of pics--slightly different angles of the falls. If they turn out OK, I might post a couple of others.

I'm rather surprised those pics turned out as well as they did, considering it was a disposable camera and I was zonked to the bejeezus belt when I snapped them. Maybe I'll post my fav pic of Dunn's River Falls (the one framed on my bathroom wall), which turned out exceptionally well, I think. I've since got a digital camera, which I didn't even take on my last trip to Negril (I loaned it to my son, whose HS lacrosse team was in Miami for a week for a spring break lacrosse tournament), but I'm taking my digital camera on next month's trip to Negril and hope to get some good pics. I gotta remember to get extra memory cards.

Nice pictures, if I get time I'll need to visit the place. Waterfalls make we want to go to the bathroom for some reason.......do they serve beer?

How far is this place away from "down town"? Jamaica has a special way :o of saying stuff is in a certain town when it's really up to 20 miles away.

Rub it in, Tinks (since you know I'll be stuck in Negril)!

Pssst...does the offer of one side of your double bed still go?

Chase you own virgin plus Teef made you that offer!

BTW, there has been some chatter about us raiding your hotel-- I'll start a thread to make a formal announcement.

Oh, please don't do that to me! Between the buds I'd chewed and the mushroom tea, I'll be so paranoid that I'll think it's the Red Stripes pounding on my door and jump out the window!

Oh, that was Teef? Well, Teef, I think I'll have a double bed at the Grand Pineapple in Negril. Which side do you want--top or bottom?

Of course they serve beer. Do you think I'd patronize any place that doesn't serve beer? They serve the best Red Stripe on the island there.
