What types of Fruit do they eat in Jamaica?

Postby ECO » Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:09 pm

Question: All over Jamaica people are selling fruit from the back of pickup trucks and at roadside stands. As a tourist I am not use to these weird looking fruits, what are they and what do they taste like?

How much should I pay these vendors for their fruit?

Jamaica has a wide variety of fruits...mango, papaya, ackee (as in ackee and saltfish), soursop, sweetsop, sorrel (used in juice), jackfruit, june plum, breadfruit, guava, guinep (which in Barbados I believe is called ackee!!) and loads more recognisable ones pomegranate and avocado.

One fruit which I wouldn't fancy eating is Stinkintoe...apparently it looks like a toe and smells like one....ugh!!! :o

I guess whatever price you pay is going to be 'tourist rates' unless one of your Jamaican friends buys it without you being in the vicinity at the time...lol...but I suppose if your haggling skills are good then go for it.

I love the bananas as well but I can't understand how ours in the states look so perfect and the Jamaican ones look ugly when they come off the tree. I wonder if they fill in the voids and spray paint ours before we buy them in the stores? For some reason the Jamaican bananas have much more flavor!
